Car Hire

Whether you plan to travel to every corner of the UK or thoroughly explore the city or region you are staying in, hiring a car could be your best option.

The UK does have a public transport system that utilises, buses, coaches, trams and trains to get you around the country. However it also has an extensive road network that uses motorways and A-roads, as well as streets and lanes to connect towns and cities across England, Scotland and Wales.

To be eligible to drive in the UK you should be at least 17 years old and have a valid driving licence. Although if you are hiring a car many car hire companies require you to be 23 years old with a year's worth of driving experience or more.

Before hiring a car you should really work out your vehicle needs. It is worth thinking about how far you will travel, how long you need the car for, how much space you will need for passengers and luggage and the how comfortable you would like to be, as all these factors will dictate the price of the vehicle will hire.

Rates for car hire depend on a number of factors but probably one of the most significant is the type of car you hire. Many car hire companies will have a number of cars on offer that range from small, compact cars to luxury vehicles, with the cost of hiring something like a people carrier or a 4x4 off road vehicle falling somewhere between these two extremes.

Other car hire expenses you will need to take into account include fuel costs (the UK pays significantly more for its petrol that America for example), car insurance (taking the car hire company's insurance is not always required) and additional travelling charges for example using toll roads and entering London's congestion charging zone.
